Fence, gate and door rules

Louisiana enforces the 2021 ICC codes with state amendments; the 2024 editions are still at the proposal stage (LUCCC). The residential pool barrier standard in that code family sets the top of the barrier at no less than 48 in above grade, limits openings so a 4 in sphere won't pass, and requires gates that close and latch on their own. If the house forms one side, doors to the pool need an alarm or another approved safeguard. Confirm details, including any local setback, before ordering a fence.

Floodplain permits

LCG lists a separate floodplain development permit, and its floodplain page says all development in the city and unincorporated parish needs a permit, with zero net fill in mapped floodplains (LCG). LCG's permits page also notes that some construction needs a state DEQ stormwater permit (LCG). See our groundwater and zero net fill page.

License check

Residential pool jobs over $7,500 need a contractor holding the state's swimming pool classification (LSLBC). Look the business up on the LSLBC verification page before paying a deposit, and match the legal name to the contract.

Call 811 first

Louisiana 811 needs two full business days' notice before digging, at no charge (811). The builder normally places the ticket, but it's a fair thing to ask about, along with where runoff will go during the dig.

Common questions

Who issues pool permits around Lafayette?

Inside Lafayette and in unincorporated Lafayette Parish it's LCG, 705 West University Ave, (337) 291-8200 or 311, which lists a swimming pool permit application (LCG). Youngsville, Broussard, Scott, Carencro and Duson run their own permits; New Iberia, Breaux Bridge and Abbeville are in other parishes. Builders usually file.

How tall must a pool fence be in Louisiana?

Louisiana enforces the 2021 ICC codes with state amendments (state code council). Their pool barrier rule calls for at least 48 in of height, gaps a 4 in ball can't pass, and gates that shut and latch by themselves. Your permit office has the final word for your address.

How can I check that a pool company is licensed?

For residential pool work above $7,500, Louisiana requires a swimming pool classification from the contractors' board (LSLBC). Search the company on the board's lookup and make sure the name matches your contract.
