Written for Acadiana

Flat ground, slow drainage, heavy rain.

The silt loams under Lafayette hold water in winter, and after the 2016 flood the parish began requiring that floodplain fill be offset. Good builders plan the dig around both: pumps when the hole seeps, a relief valve in the drain, and a plan for the dirt. Read about groundwater and zero net fill.

Permits, fences & licenses

Permits: LCG for the city of Lafayette and unincorporated parish; Youngsville, Broussard, Scott and Carencro issue their own.

Fences: the state's 2021 codes call for a barrier at least 48 in tall with self-closing, self-latching gates.

Licenses: pool jobs over $7,500 need an LSLBC swimming pool classification. Look it up before you pay.

Good questions

Frequently asked questions.

How much is an inground pool in Lafayette, LA?

Most finished pools here fall between about $52,000 and $105,000 before a fence or a bigger deck. One Breaux Bridge builder lists 122 fiberglass models installed from $51,900 to $86,900 (Acadiana Pools), and custom gunite starts around $56,000 and often tops $100,000 with a spa.

Do Lafayette pool builders publish prices?

One does. Acadiana Pools prints an installed starting price on every fiberglass model, with permits, taxes and a 3 ft concrete border included (its inclusions list). Most others, including the gunite shops, price after a site visit, so a range like ours is the best way to know where you stand before they come out.

What is the cheapest kind of pool to put in?

A vinyl liner pool usually has the lowest first price, from roughly $40,000 for a small one (our estimate, from This Old House). The liner wears out and gets replaced every several years, so the gap with fiberglass shrinks the longer you own it.

Fiberglass or gunite for a yard in Acadiana?

Choose fiberglass if a stock shape fits: it goes in within weeks, and its smooth gel surface stays cleaner in our humid summers. Choose gunite for a custom shape, a raised spa, a tanning ledge or anything wider than about 16 ft. Gunite takes one and a half to three months to build.

Is groundwater a problem when digging a pool here?

Often, from December to April. The silty soils around Lafayette drain slowly; USDA describes Frost soils, common in low spots, as wet within 0–1.5 ft through those months (USDA). Expect pumping during a winter dig and ask for a hydrostatic relief valve.

What does a hydrostatic relief valve do?

It sits in the floor drain and opens when the water pushing up from the ground is stronger than the water in the pool, so the shell takes on a little groundwater instead of lifting or cracking. Trade writers call it useful but "not a cure-all" (Aqua Magazine).

Can I empty my own pool?

Not without your builder. An empty shell on wet ground can be pushed upward, and fiberglass, being light, is the most exposed (Shotcrete, 2025). Leave the job of lowering the water more than a foot to the people who built it.

What is zero net fill, and does it affect my pool?

Since November 2017, Lafayette Consolidated Government has required that development in the floodplain not reduce flood storage: in LCG's words, bring one bucket in and take one bucket out (LCG). A pool dig makes a lot of dirt, so on a floodplain lot plan on hauling it off rather than raising the yard. Ask LCG how it applies to yours.
